Tear Trough Filler Treatments – Delivered by Dr Sabrina Shah-Desai, Leading Oculoplastic Surgeon

The tear trough is the area between your cheek and lower eyelid. As we age, we lose volume in this area sometimes causing under-eye dark circles to appear. An effective tear trough treatment is to inject filler into this area – restoring the lost volume and reducing the appearance of dark circles.

Mrs. Shah-Desai is an oculoplastic surgeon with over 20 years of surgical experience treating intricate facial anatomy. She is a specialist in eye rejuvenation treatments, achieving natural-looking results which give the patient a younger, fresher, less tired-looking appearance.

Tear Trough Review
I have always felt conscious about my dark circles and since having a baby they have become a lot worse. I've used lots of eye creams, but nothing has made a noticeable difference. The Eye-Boost treatment has been brilliant. Sabrina was very gentle and quick. The treatment was practically pain free and I only had a little bit of bruising, which disappeared within a week. Lots of my friends and have commented on how much brighter my face looks and I don't look as tired, which has given me the confidence to go out without make-up on. I'm very pleased with the results.

Under-Eye Dark Circles and “crepey” dehydrated eyelid skin

Some patients presenting with dark circles or a loss of volume in the area below the eye, have thin sun damaged eyelid skin, rather than a deep volume loss. Dr Shah-Desai carefully layers Restylane Vital light to hydra rejuvenate the thin eyelid skin which plumps the lower eyelid to improve the apparent “tear trough”. She has pioneered this filler treatment (Eye-Boost), to rejuvenate the thin lower eyelid skin, which can worsen the illusion of under-eye shadows.

Dr Shah-Desai performs a tear trough treatment using needles, as cannulas can be inaccurate in this region.

Perfect for under-eye dark circles due to thin eyelid skin in a younger age group (mid 20’s to 40’s)

  • Specialist Doctor treatment: Precise & natural results
  • Painless: Topical anesthesia is required
  • Effective: Able to plump, lift and smooth for 6-18 months
  • Downtime: Patients may swell / bruise / develop visible lumpiness for 3-7 days. There is a no risk of sight loss or skin necrosis.

Results may vary based on a variety of factors; to ensure suitability you must attend a consultation.

What are the different fillers?

Fillers can be permanent non autologous (eg Sculptra, Aquamid, Ellanse) or autologous (eg fat) or temporary (eg Restylane,  Juverderm, Belotero, Teosyal).

Restylane is the number one selling hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal filler and the most-studied cosmetic filler in the world. Restylane, Juverderm, Belotero are FDA approved, whilst Teosyal & Emervel are CE marked.

I prefer using hyaluronic acid fillers, as they are relatively safe, with immediate results and almost no downtime. These fillers are not of animal or human origin, therefore a skin test is not needed and you can have the HA treatments performed immediately. HA fillers are biodegradable which means that they are gradually absorbed as the gel breaks down and water takes its place. When totally absorbed, the HA gel disappears unnoticed from the body. How long a HA filler treatment holds its effect is very individual but can last from 6-18 months. This depends on many factors, such as your age, skin type, lifestyle, and muscle activity, as well as on product injected.

Tear Trough Fillers. What to expect…

The injections are usually painless, after suitable topical anesthesia for 15 minutes. When treating the eyelid skin, the filler is injected under the skin, in tiny aliquots, with a very thin needle. After the treatment bruising and visible lumps are to be expected for 3-7 days. This can be effectively covered up with Oxygenatix foundation & patients can resume work.

HA fillers are biodegradable which means that they will gradually be absorbed as the gel breaks down, water takes its place. When totally absorbed, the HA gel disappears unnoticed from the body. These injections give natural volume and a typical treatment takes about 15 minutes and the results can be seen within 1 week, once the associated swelling and bruising settles.

Men vs Women

Men usually prefer to retain their craggy facial appearance and tend to require less volumization but deeper lifting, specially concentrating on their cheeks and under-eye area.

Most women like to have a more smooth volumized appearance and prefer focussing on eyes and lips with gentle pan facial rejuvenation.

Dr Shah-Desai’s EyeBoost™ can be used alone or to complement traditional tear trough treatments.

Compatible treatments
